Cantona dismisses Manchester City’s title challenge

Eric Cantona has dismissed Manchester City’s Premier League title bid, despite their colossal spending spree this summer.

Cantona had a good spell playing against the Blues during his playing days for United but their new found financial might could mean they would be ready to mount a challenge for the Premier League title. While Sir Alex Ferguson has so far only bought youngsters Javier Hernandez and Chris Smalling, Roberto Mancini has already signed David Silva, Yaya Toure and Jerome Boateng & Kolarov — with more signings expected.

Cantona insisted that Manchester City remained off the pace – referring to Michael Owen and Paul Scholes’ last minute winners in meetings between the two sides last season.

“If they (City) play a game against United for 89 minutes, maybe they’ll have a chance!” Cantona joked.”

“But I think United have a team that is experienced and they have young players also – they still work on young players.”

“Chelsea don’t look so good, Liverpool seem to have problems. Arsenal? Maybe.”

The Frenchman was in town and took the opportunity to pay his old boss a visit at United’s Carrington training ground.

Days after seeing David Beckham don their green and gold scarf, the Manchester United Supporters Trust are calling on Eric Cantona to join them.

The Manchester United Supporters Trust have written an open letter to the likes of Eric Cantona and Peter Schmeichel aimed at encouraging other Old Trafford icons to visibly support their war against the club’s owners.

Part of a letter to MUST’s 131,000 members reads: “I’m sure you were watching the incredible moment when Beckham bathed in green and gold. It’s moments like this that justify all the collective effort we’ve been putting into this campaign. We are showing our strength. We are making a real difference.

“We welcomed a legend back to Old Trafford – now we need to capitalise on this moment and bring other United heroes into our fold.

“We’ve just written a letter to Beckham, Cantona and all of the former United players which calls on them to join our campaign to reclaim United.

“This is our chance to reach out to the United players who built our club – who led from the front and defined United’s success over the past decades. But our club is in trouble – we need them to lead United again right here, right now.

“Beckham united with the fans and led by example. Beckham has shown his true colours, now it’s up to us to show ours.

“The time to reclaim United is now.”

Ferguson to present Legend of Football award to Cantona

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson will honour Eric Cantona with the prestigious Legend of Football Award at the annual Football Extravaganza, which this year will be held at the Hilton Park Lane, on Monday 12th April 2010.

Cantona has been widely regarded as one of the best players in Manchester United’s illustrious history, and spent five years at Old Trafford inspiring Sir Alex Ferguson’s side to four Premier League titles and two FA Cups. One of Ferguson’s greatest ever signings, the Scot will be in attendance to give the former striker his award on the 15th anniversary of the event in aid of Nordoff Robbins.

Cantona was voted Manchester United’s player of the century and is still revered at Old Trafford where fans still sing his name and don his mask and t-shirts. He was voted PFA Player of the year in 1994 and the FWA Footballer of the Year in 1996.

Previous recipients of the Legend of Football Award at the annual Football Extravaganza include Sir Stanley Matthews, Sir Bobby Robson, Sir Bobby Charlton and indeed Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson. Expected to be in attendance to see Cantona receive his award are a host of luminaries from the world of football including Tony Adams, Sir Bobby Charlton, Alan Curbishley, Kenny Dalglish, Denis Law, Teddy Sheringham and Alan Shearer, all of whom are official patrons of the longest running annual charity football event.

Cantona admits Champions League regret

Eric Cantona has admitted that he regrets missing out on Manchester United’s Champions League triumph in 1999.

After leaving United at the end of the 1997 season, Cantona moved to Barcelona with his family.

In Andy Mitten’s book, Glory Glory: Man Utd in the ’90s, Cantona says: “When you see teams win things you want to be involved.”

“But I had been away from football for two years. I was proud and happy. I knew ten of the players and Ferguson. I was very happy for him. I would have loved to have been on the pitch in Barcelona, of course.”

Rooney: I Loved Watching Cantona

Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney has revealed that he might have been a boyhood Everton fan but always held United in the highest regard, most notably citing Eric Cantona as a player he loved to watch.

Rooney is quoted by the Sun, saying: “Growing up, although I was an Everton fan, I loved watching United – especially Eric Cantona.”

“He had something about him. You looked at him and he was fearsome. And that was just on TV! Imagine playing up against him.”

Manchester United fans are planning to don Eric Cantona masks in a crucial Premier League encounter against Liverpool at Anfield tomorrow.

After a thrilling 3-3 Anfield draw in January 1994, Liverpool supporters unfurled a taunting banner which read: “Au revoir, Cantona and Man United. Come back when you’ve won 18.”

Now, following a 15-year wait, the bitter rivals are all square in terms of titles won – and Manchester United fans are relishing the prospect of letting the home crowd know just that.

They plan to arrive at Anfield sporting masks of United legend Eric Cantona.

T-shirts have also been printed with the slogan “18 titles and that’s a fact,” in reference to Liverpool manager’s Rafael Benitez’s rant of a year ago.

Poborsky believes Nedved was better than Cantona

The former Manchester United winger Karel Poborsky believes the greatest player he has ever played with during his illustrious career is Juventus and Czech Republic legend Pavel Nedved. The ex-Benfica and Lazio winger claims his Old Trafford teammates Eric Cantona and Peter Schmeichel were also brilliant, but Nedved was top.

Poborsky told the Daily Mail: “It’s a difficult one, because I am always proud that I had the opportunity to play with great players like Cantona and (Peter) Schmeichel,”

“But if I had to mention just one, it would be Pavel Nedved.”

Poborsky moved to Manchester United in the aftermath of Euro 96, where the ponytailed midfielder scored one of the goals of the tournament against Portugal.

Already a surprise signing on a free transfer from Manchester United after they missed out on signing Karim Benzema, the England striker was handed the iconic number seven jersey at United.
